The College

Founded in 1350, Trinity Hall is one of the oldest of the University of Cambridge’s colleges. It is home to over 650 students, studying undergraduate and postgraduate subjects. Moreover, the college boasts such notable alumni as Stephen Hawking and Andrew Marr. That’s why the college needed a new website, which would represent the college’s profile, and focused on the college’s needs and goals.

The Brief

A rebooted university website

Before working with Crucible, the Trinity Hall website was outdated and difficult to use. The site no longer reflected the institution’s values and vision. Crucible was approached to work on a website redesign to transform the site into a forward-thinking and modern portal for students and members of the wider college community. The Trinity Hall team wanted the site to feel confident and dynamic, as well as still being approachable and inclusive. The key objectives of the new site were to refresh the college’s digital identity and information architecture – with the goal of ensuring more streamlined user journeys.

Information Architecture

The old information architecture was confusing and cluttered, resulting in unlinked and inaccessible pages. The Crucible team completely overhauled the site’s structure, prioritising a cleaner and more efficient information architecture. The new structure was designed to cater to more tailored user journeys for the personas identified during our discovery with the college. The Crucible team were able to structure the new information architecture quickly and efficiently, processing over 150 pages in total.

A new university website identity

Trinity Hall were keen to implement a cohesive brand identity across the institution’s departments. The Trinity Hall team hadn’t previously established a complete brand identity, which made it difficult to reflect the institution as a modern and inclusive college of the university. No broad set of brand colours were in place and only limited identity guidelines existed. The college’s chapel was used as a reference point for establishing the institution’s brand guidelines, and the colour palette inspired by the chapel’s crests and stained glass windows.

To further Trinity Hall’s brand identity, the Crucible team supported the team by defining a tone of voice and subsequently developing and writing copy for many pages on the new website. Crucible’s copywriters conducted interviews with current students to make a start on defining a brand voice that the Trinity Hall team could push further in their future work.

WordPress Multisite

Trinity Hall had a range of departments that were being managed by their individual groups and admin users. Crucible recommended WordPress Multisite, which allows a network of sites to be created and managed under one WordPress installation. Each child site created has been specifically designed with the unique functionalities and levels of access required for the college’s departmental teams. This approach ensures a more cohesive digital strategy that meets all of Trinity Hall’s requirements.

Installing WordPress Multisite ensures the Trinity Hall website is future-proofed. It allows the team to easily create new child sites for future departments or needs at any point. With a centralised CMS, the Trinity Hall team will be able to easily and quickly upload, update and manage content across their sites.

Technical Considerations

The Trinity Hall team were keen to streamline their digital offerings by implementing an e-commerce feature on the site’s gift shop and integrating a booking system for events. The Crucible development team recommended WooCommerce, an e-commerce platform that works seamlessly with WordPress. Alongside this, we recommended the secure payments system FreedomPay, to effectively and quickly manage the site’s online store. The Crucible development team recommended using an iFrame for event bookings, in order to seamlessly integrate a previous legacy system. This would allow users to quickly and easily make bookings online.

The website now accurately reflects the institution’s vision and values, and caters to a wider range of users across the college’s various departments. The new website feels confident and exciting, yet maintains inclusivity and friendliness.
